submitted by Terry Woster, SD Department of Public Safety

A Rapid City woman died and four other people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 16 B and Black Hills Boulevard on Monday, Aug. 26.

Audrey F. Gerlach, 94, was a passenger in a 2009 Chevrolet Impala driven by Charles Kendall Gerlach, 95, of Rapid City. The vehicle was eastbound in the passing lane on Highway 16B. Charles Gerlach failed to use the left-turn lane as he attempted to make a turn onto Black Hills Boulevard. The vehicle entered the path of westbound traffic and was struck by a 2008 Ford Econoline van driven by Kenneth Edwin Leathers, 31, of Rapid City.

Audrey Gerlach was taken to a Rapid City hospital where she died of injuries received in the crash. Another passenger in the Chevrolet, Eugene Francis Lund, 98, of Rapid City, received life-threatening injuries. He was taken to a Rapid City hospital. Charles Gerlach received minor injuries. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Leathers received serious injuries, as did a passenger, Nola Charging Bear, 29, of Rapid City. They were wearing seatbelts.

No further information is immediately available.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department and Rapid City Fire Department assisted.
